When you begin preparing for your first transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy session, you might wonder what to expect. You may have questions about beginning your treatment program or about NeuroStar in general. What does the TMS treatment device feel like? Does it hurt? How long does the treatment take?
We explore these essential patient questions below along with other concerns you might have prior to your first TMS session at Chrysalis Psychiatry. If you have any additional questions, bring them to us—we pride ourselves on ensuring that our patients are empowered with the information they need to make informed treatment decisions about their mental health.
While the exact nature of the NeuroStar Advanced TMS program may differ based on your unique needs, it typically includes a series of short TMS treatment sessions, each lasting up to 19 minutes, delivered five times a week for approximately seven weeks.
Over the course of your NeuroStar treatment program, from the moment you begin your first TMS session, your progress is closely monitored by our team of TMS providers and clinical specialists, and your program can be adjusted as needed to optimize your results.
Your initial TMS therapy session, along with your other sessions, will take place in the comfort and privacy of our psychiatrist’s office. You will sit comfortably in our treatment chair while one of our technicians places the treatment device—including a small electromagnetic coil—on your head. The NeuroStar TMS device will then generate magnetic pulses, which may feel like a tapping sensation on your head, with the sound of clicking or tapping. This will continue as we navigate the device to reach the target brain areas.
Most patients experience little discomfort, though there may be some mild and temporary sensations, such as a headache or scalp tenderness. These sensations usually subside once the session has been completed and can easily be treated with over-the-counter pain relief.
Throughout your NeuroStar Advanced TMS treatment, you will be awake and conscious. There is no sedation or anesthesia involved. Since you will be fully alert, you can choose to relax, read, or scroll on your phone during your treatment—all you have to do is sit still.
Since the treatment itself takes less than 20 minutes—and the entire appointment will take less than an hour—many patients find it very easy to integrate NeuroStar therapy into their daily routine.
If you are ready for your first TMS session, schedule your consultation with Chrysalis Psychiatry. We can help you access all the information and resources you need to confirm if this treatment will work for you!
